The Homestead Man

Perhaps one of the most persistent, resilient and unappreciated of all deities is none other than the diminutive house god known as Tomte or Nisse, The Homestead Man. Descriptions of these Gods of The Home range from being but a few inches tall to nearly half the size of a grown man, faces hidden beneath large white beards, heads topped with woven or pointed caps, with stout bodies proudly adorned in typical farmers garb and work writes of their region, though a few sizes too small for any human to enjoy.

Why is the Tomte so important? Why he is not one God but many!

He; for it is always a he, is most commonly one of the many ancestral spirits from which the owners of the homestead descend. Often, but not always, the Tomte which chooses to aid; and he does choose, to safeguard his families interests was the first to tend the land or might be the soul of a departed loved one buried in any of the many mounds; both known and forgotten, which dot the realm. Each Tomte is its own entity, individuals all, each with his own distinct personality and passions, though what they have in common is their station. They often delight in tending to both the land and home helping keep their family in good standing as best they can. Being humble and giving by nature, these House Gods do not ask much, often contenting themselves to making their own private space in the pantry, a forgotten corner of the barn or even workshop. Their dedication to their families is such that it is not unheard of that if their families are forced to move to the city, that they very well might follow them contenting themselves to finding space under the floorboards to remain near.

They do all this out of Love, Love for their family, and of course Love of Porridge!

All of this "good fortune" however relies on the mortals making sure their Dear Little Relative is appreciated, and so is less luck and more skill and appreciation.

Title: Surtur, Guardian of Muspelheim

Theme: Icelandic Folklore & Norse Mythology

Surtur is a fire giant and the guardian of Muspelheim in Eddic Mythology. He is one of the greatest foes the Aesir fight at Ragnarok and leads the forces of Muspell against the might of Asgard. At Ragnarok he is said to fight Freyr in combat armed with the Sun of the Slain, the bright sword of Surtur, who emerges victorious though the fight is close and it is said it would have gone in Freyr's favor had he not given his sword away to Skirnir.

In Icelandic folklore Surtr is a very different figure. Instead of being an apocalyptic fire Giant opposed to the Aesir he is the God of the Volcano that formed Iceland and its surrounding Islands, effectively being the reason for the entire Icelandic way of life.

Sculpted bronze figure of the Celtic god Ogma, by Lee Lawrie.
As the god of the spoken and written word, he stands guard by the east entrance of the Library of Congress, John Adams Building, Washington, D.C.
In Tir-na-Moe, the Land of the Living Heart, Brigit was singing. Angus the Ever Young, and Midyir the Red-Maned, and Ogma that is called splendor of the Sun, and the Dagda and all the Lords of the people of Dana drew near to listen. Brigit sang:

New comes the hour foretold, a god-gift bringing

A wonderful sight.

Is it a star new-born and splendid up springing

Out of the night?

Is it a wave from the Fountain of Beauty upflinging

Foam of delight?

Is it a glorious immortal bird that is winging

Hither its flight?

It is a wave high-crested, melodious, triumphant,

Breaking in Light.

It is a star, rose-hearted and joyous, a splendor

Risen from night.

It is a flame from the world of the Gods, and love runs before it,

A quenchless delight.

Let the wave break, let the star rise, let the flame leap.

Ours, if our hearts are wise,

To take and keep.
I, for one, am for settling disputes the old fashioned way. ⚔️💪🏻

(Time is money)

The grass is always greener when you don’t realize everything you need is right in front of you.
Your desires and dreams can get in the way of real life goals if they are not supplemented by rational and realistic expectations.
Such is the cost of finite time.

If time were infinite, it would be worthless, but since it is not, it is the most valuable currency in the world.
It is the great equalizer, since both politicians and kings, as well as common folk and beggars cannot slow it down, nor stop it.
Time is one of those things that make men mightier than gods.
Our actions can either carry weight or drag us down by wasting it.

If you spend your time with undesirables, then you will spend your finite currency in suboptimal
ways.
If you utilize your time being constructive and building up your tribesmen and kin, you will see true meaning manifest itself in real time.

Celebrate your folk while you still have them, and they you.
Our people are worth every glory, every honor, and every accolade when deserved. This goes both for the living among us and the revered ones who have come before.

Spend your time wisely Hyperborean,
You are wealthier than you know.
Ancestor Veneration Begins with The Living

Recently someone close to us weathered the death of a treasured family member, in the aftermath he discovered something his treasured Mother wrote of her Father -His Grandfather- a short recollection of a man who was her "Freckled Atlas" who raised her well with warmth and a firm hand when needed.

This heartfelt description of her father begins as such:

"Although he is a big man with a gruff voice which spouts curse words at regular intervals, he has a heart that envelopes everyone around him. I have seen him quiet a whimpering small child and save a grown man's life."

and by the end of this short loving bit of prose:

"Of all the persons I've known, this man has influenced me the most, not only because he is my daddy but because he is also my friend, who laughs and jokes with me, and my guide, who gives me advice and warns me about the world. Daddy may be a stern and severe father at times, but most of the time he is my "Freckled Atlas" who looks after me and loves me."

Reading this while I bear no ties to the family of my friend the love and adoration our friends mother held for his grandfather brought a tear to my eye and reminded me of something incredibly important.

Ancestor Veneration Begins with the Living. Remind your parents, your grandparents and all of your family how much they mean to you. They may not be here tomorrow, you may not be here tomorrow, but that love between each other will.

Tribalism unites, strengthens, and safeguards, whether comprised of kith, kin, or both.
This is the way.
