Topic : comparison of the c3d8 and c3d8r elements (part3) : accurate simulation of damage pattern

According to my experience, c3d8r is more accurate in simulating the damage pattern and its results are closer to the experimental results.
Unfortunately I don't have any explanations for this fact. I have not found it in abaqus documentation or any paper.
In the papers which have studied the damage pattern in a structure (from beam to column connections to pressure vessels), you can find that most of them have used c3d8r but i don't know whether they knew this fact or not because generally c3d8r is used more than c3d8 due to what is mentioned in post 4.

Topic: when should we change the step and solver when we encounter convergence issues (part 3)

Part 2 is in post 14

As I have mentioned in post 13 (part 1), one of the effective ways to resolve convergence issues is changing the step from static general to dynamic implicit. This procedure is only effective when:

1) There are rigid body modes in the problem. Dynamic implicit step can solve this issue because it accounts for the dynamic effects such as inertial forces and acceleration of the parts does not make any problem for it.

2) Some of the parts are free to move because of clearances presented in the model. In some kinds of bolt connections or rivet connections, this problem may happen.

3) In the force control problems which insufficient number of boundary conditions are defined. This leads to the accelerating of some of the parts.

Point 1: If the main cause of convergence issue is the contact problem like the shell and solid contact or large relative displacement of the contacting parts, changing the step will not solve the convergence issue and only postpones the convergence error. In such cases, changing the contact algorithm or mesh refinement in the contacting regions must be included in the solutions and modifications.

Topic: when should we change the step and solver when we encounter convergence issues (part 4)

Part 3 is in post 15

If none of the mentioned solutions in three previous parts doesn't work, we must change the solver instead of changing the step. We must use dynamic explicit step instead of dynamic implicit.
But this solution has several limitation because the load library and element library of explicit solver is limited in comparison to the standard solver. This limitations depend on the Abaqus version because Abaqus developers are always extending the explicit solver libraries.
For example in the previous versions of Abaqus, load library of the explicit solver didn't have bolt load. Or the element library of explicit solver didn't have cubic hybrid elements. Some of these limitations have been remained unchanged until now.
There are a lot of problems which are not affected by these limitations and the exlplicit solver will solve the problem efficiently and sufficiently like the metal forming or damage analysis simulations.
