از سال ۱۹۷۲ تاکنون پنجم ژوئن روز جهانی محیط زیست محسوب می‌شود که هرسال یک موضوع مهم زیست‌بومی را شعار محوری خود قرار می‌دهد. حدود ۱۵۰ کشور در سراسر جهان در فعالیت‌های روز جهانی محیط زیست شرکت دارند.
روز جهانی محیط زیست نماد حمایت از تنوع زیستی و زیستگاه‌های طبیعی است. سازمان‌های مدافع محیط زیست و نهادهای وابسته به آنها با برنامه‌های متنوع می‌کوشند آگاهی زیست محیطی عموم مردم جهان را ارتقا دهند. فعالیت‌های مخرب انسانی بیش از هر عامل دیگری تنوع زیستی و تبات و تعادل محیط زیست را در معرض تهدید قرار داده است.
