Ethiopian born artist Julie Mehretu has broken her own record, with Walkers With the Dawn and Morning selling for $10.7 million at Sotheby’s in New York.

The abstract piece, inspired by a Langston Hughes poem and created after Hurricane Katrina, showcases Mehretu’s signature mix of architectural drawings, bold vectors, and sweeping strokes.

This milestone highlights her status as a leader in contemporary African art and the growing global appreciation for the genre. Mehretu also made headlines earlier this year as the artist behind BMW’s next Art Car, set to debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
