Describe a gift that you gave to someone recently.
You should say:

what the gift was
Whom you gave it to
how you felt about it
and explain why you chose this gift for this person.

I'd like to talk about a cell phone I bought from Alaeddin Shopping Center in Tehran, which I later gave as a gift. The phone was a sleek and modern smartphone, a popular model at the time, with a great camera and fast performance—features I knew the recipient would appreciate.

I gave this gift to my younger brother on his birthday. He had been using an older phone for a while, and it was starting to give him trouble. So, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to upgrade his device and make his daily life a little easier, especially since he's a student and uses his phone for studying and staying connected with friends.

I felt really happy and excited to give him the phone. He’s always been supportive of me, and I wanted to show my appreciation. Seeing his surprised and delighted reaction when he unwrapped it made the moment even more special for me.

I chose this gift because I knew it was something he needed and would use daily. Plus, getting it from Alaeddin Shopping Center, known for its wide variety of electronics, ensured that I could find the best option for him at a reasonable price.

America's total student debt, at over $1.5trn, is larger than the national borrowing of most countries. It has quintupled in size since 2004, overtaking both borrowing on credit cards and car finance.

Here are some useful features to notice in these sentences:

❤️A statistic is added between two commas using "at."
❤️ A comparison is made using "larger than."
❤️ The pronoun "it" is used to refer back to "America's total student debt."
❤️ "Quintupled" means "increased fivefold."
❤️ "Overtaking" can be used when describing a graph.
❤️ "Both... and..." is used to compare and contrast.

If you are reading articles in English, pay attention to real examples of the types of description that you could use for an IELTS writing task 1 .

These 5 mistakes stop people from reaching a Band 7.

Can you see any of these in your writing?

1. Not paraphrasing the task statement

Rephrase the task question in your own words to demonstrate that you’ve understood it. Using synonyms and changing the sentence structure helps. For example, if the task says, "Some people believe that too much money is spent on protecting animals and their habitats. To what extent do you agree?" you could paraphrase it as " Many argue that wildlife protection is too costly".

2. Not answering all parts of the question

The task often has multiple parts—make sure you address each one clearly. If you miss a part, you’ll lose marks for task response. For example, if the question asks about both the advantages and disadvantages of a topic, make sure you discuss both. Ignoring one part could cost you points.

3. Not starting every paragraph with a topic sentence

A topic sentence sets the tone for the paragraph and keeps it focused. Without it, your writing may lack direction. For example, if your paragraph is about the benefits of exercise, your topic sentence could be: "One major advantage of regular exercise is its positive impact on physical health." This makes it clear what the paragraph will focus on.

4. Listing too many ideas, but not developing them

Instead of throwing out a bunch of ideas without much detail, practice in writing about two key points per paragraph, and back them up with explanations and examples. This adds depth to your argument.

5. Writing paragraphs that are too long or too short

Some students write huge paragraphs because they try to cram in too much information without breaking it up. Others just randomly divide their essay into very short ones because they don’t understand the purpose of paragraphing. Find a balance - each paragraph should focus on one main point with enough detail to explain it clearly

In IELTS Writing Task 2, you can effectively use counterarguments in the following types of questions:

1. Agree or Disagree Questions: When the prompt asks you whether you agree or disagree with a statement, you can present a counterargument to show the other side of the issue. After stating your opinion, acknowledging a counterargument can strengthen your position.

*Example*: "While I agree that... it is also important to consider that..."

2. Discussion Questions: These questions often ask you to discuss both views on a particular topic. Presenting counterarguments allows you to explore the topic more thoroughly by discussing opposing viewpoints before concluding with your own opinion.

*Example*: "Some people argue that... However, others believe that..."

3. Problem-Solution Questions: In these questions, you can include counterarguments when discussing potential solutions to a problem. Acknowledging that some solutions may have drawbacks can enhance the depth of your analysis.

*Example*: "Although implementing this solution may face challenges, it is crucial to consider..."

4. Advantages and Disadvantages Questions: You can use counterarguments to highlight the disadvantages of a situation after discussing its advantages, providing a balanced view.

*Example*: "While there are several advantages to..., there are also significant disadvantages to consider..."

Including counterarguments in your essays can demonstrate critical thinking and the ability to engage with multiple perspectives, which are important skills evaluated in IELTS Writing Task 2.
