The Best Charity
Abu Hurairah (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) said:
There came a man to the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and said,
"O Messenger of Allah, which charity is the most rewardable?"
He (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said,
“That you should give charity (when you are)
healthy
and stingy
and fearing poverty,
hoping to become rich
(this is the best of charity).
And you must not defer (charity to such a length) that you are about to die and would be saying: 'This is for so-and-so, and this for so-and-so.'
Lo! It has already come into (the possession of) so-and-so".
[Riyadh as-Saliheen, Chapter 10: Hastening to do Good Deeds, Hadith 90, al-Bukhari and Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 90]
Note: While sadaqah is already a highly rewarding good deed,
they still wanted to know the “most rewarding, the best” of that deed.
These were the Sahabah about whom Allah says:
{رَّضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ}
“Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him” (5:119)
