A man came to 'Umar b. al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه to complain about his wife's ill-temper.

While he was waiting for 'Umar to come out of his house, he heard 'Umar's wife scolding him and 'Umar quietly listening to her, and not answering her back.

The man turned around and started walking away, muttering to himself, "If that is the case with 'Umar, the leader of believers, who is famous for his uprightness and toughness, then what about poor me?!"

At that moment, 'Umar came out of his house and saw the man walking away.

He called him and said: "What is it you want of me, O man?"

The man replied: "O' leader of the believers, I came to complain to you about my wife's bad- temper and how she nags me. Then I heard your wife doing the same to you, so I turned around, muttering to my self, "If that is the situation of the leader of the believers, then what about me?"

'Umar replied: "O my brother, I bear with her because of her rights over me. She cooks my food, bakes my bread, washes my clothes, breastfeeds my child... And yet none of these are her duty; and then she is a comfort to my heart and keeps me away from forbidden deeds. Consequently, I beat with her."

The man said: "It is the same with me, O' leader of the believers."

'Umar said: "Then, O' my brother, be patient with her, indeed this life is short."

SEEKING REFUGE WITH OTHER THAN ALLĀH INCREASES ONE IN FEAR AND TERROR

ALLĀH says,

And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they (jinn) increased them (men) in Rahaq.

meaning, 'we used to think that we had some virtuous status over mankind because they used to seek refuge with us whenever they (men) would settle in a valley or any place in the wilderness, the open country steppes and other places.'

This was the custom of the Arabs in the pre-Islamic days of ignorance. They used to seek refuge with the greatest Jinn of a particular place so that no harm or evil would afflict them. Like one would do if he entered into the land of his enemies, in the vicinity of a great and powerful man, he would seek the protection and guardianship of that man.

So when the Jinns saw that the humans were seeking refuge with them due to their fear of them, they increased them in Rahaq which means fear, terror and fright. They did this so that the people would be more afraid of them and seek refuge with them even more.

As Qatadah said concerning this Ayah,

but they increased them in Rahaq.

means, "the Jinns were courageous and increased in insolence against them."

As-Suddi said, "A man used to set out with his family ˹on a journey˺ until he came to a piece of land where he would settle. Then he would say, 'I seek refuge with the master (Jinn) of this valley from the Jinns, or that myself, my wealth, my child or my animals are harmed in it."'

Qatadah said, "When they sought refuge with them instead of ALLĀH, the Jinns would overcome them with harm because of that."

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded from `Ikrimah that he said, "The Jinns used to fear humans just like humans fear them, or even worse. So whenever humans would come to a valley the Jinns would flee. So the leader of the people would say, 'We seek refuge with the leader of the inhabitants of this valley.'

So the Jinns said, 'We see these people fleeing from us just like we flee from them.'

Thus, the Jinns started coming near the humans and afflicting them with insanity and madness."

{Tafsi‌r Ibn Kathīr (Abridged)}

#ibnkathir #jinn (72:5)

It is reported on the authority of Umran Ibn Husain (may ALLĀH be pleased with him), that ALLĀH’s Messenger (ﷺ) saw a man with a brass ring in his hand, and he asked him; "What is this?" He replied: "It is for protection from al-waahinah (rheumatism)." The Prophet (ﷺ) answered: "Remove it at once, for verily, it will not increase you except in weakness, and were you to die whilst wearing it, you would never be successful." {Ahmad 4/445}

Khaula bint Hakim Sulamiyya reported: I heard ALLĀH's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: "When anyone lands at a place, and then says:

A'ūdhu bi-kalimatillāhi at-tāmmāt min sharri mā kalaqa (I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of ALLĀH from the evil of what HE has created),'

nothing would harm him until he marches from that stopping place."
{Muslim #2708}

It was narrated that 'Uthman bin Abul-'As-Thaqafi said: I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and I was suffering pain that was killing me. The Prophet (ﷺ) said to me: "Put your right hand on it and say seven times:

Bismillah, a'ūdhu bi’izzatil-lahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uḥādhiru. (In the Name of ALLĀH, I seek refuge in the might and power of ALLĀH from the evil of what I feel and what I fear),"

And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous."

But as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them in full their rewards, and Allah does not like the wrongdoers.

10th Muharram: Why Do We Fast?
Hadith on Ashura (Saturday 5th July): Recommendation to fast the day of Ashura

Ibn Umar reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Ashura is a day among the days of Allah. Whoever wishes to fast may do so, and whoever wishes to break his fast may do so.”

[Source: S‌ah‌i‌h‌ Muslim 1126
Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Muslim]

"And O my people, seek forgiveness from your Lord and then turn to Him in repentance. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength in addition to your strength. And do not turn away as wrong-doers."

Then he (i.e., the Prophet) commanded them to seek forgiveness, which wipes out past sins, and to repent for what is to come. Whoever adopts this quality, Allah makes his provision easier, facilitates his affairs, and protects his state and strength.
That is why He said:
"He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers" —
and in the Hadith:
"Whoever constantly seeks forgiveness, Allah will make for him a way out of every worry, a relief from every distress, and provide for him from where he does not expect."
