Boston Children’s Hospital and SPHMMC Collaborate to Advance Pediatric Nursing Practice in Ethiopia
In a significant step toward enhancing pediatric healthcare, a team of global health nurses from the Margaret C. Ryan Global Health Program at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) visited St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) for a week-long collaboration aimed at strengthening nursing practice and education.
The BCH nurses worked closely with nursing leadership and faculty from the SPHMMC School of Nursing to support the development of nursing practice committees. These committees are a critical component in fostering evidence-based care, leadership, and professional development within the nursing workforce.
In direct response to identified needs from the nursing staff, the BCH team also delivered targeted short courses on infection control—specifically tailored for nurses in the Pediatric Emergency Room (ER) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The trainings covered essential topics such as peripheral IV care and medication administration, as well as ventilator care and management, with a focus on safety and quality in high-acuity settings.
This visit reflects the ongoing partnership between SPHMMC and Boston Children’s Hospital, grounded in a shared mission to improve nursing practice, education, research, and quality improvement. Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to collaborative efforts that enhance pediatric patient care in emergency and critical care environments.
SPHMMC expressed its appreciation for the continued support and emphasized the importance of sustainable global partnerships in advancing healthcare standards. The hospital looks forward to building on this momentum and further deepening its collaboration with Boston Children’s Hospital in the years to come.

Quadruplets Delivered Safely at St. Paul’s Hospital
A 30-year-old mother from Assosa has safely delivered quadruplets at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa. The babies were born at 31 weeks via a carefully managed delivery due to the mother’s pre-eclampsia. This was her fourth pregnancy; she already has two children.
Led by Dr. Ruth Solomon and assisted by Dr. Getamesay Mola, a skilled medical team ensured a safe delivery. All four premature babies are stable and being cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
“The successful delivery was due to teamwork and timely care,” said Dr. Ruth Solomon. The mother and babies are under close observation and improving well.
The father, a driver in Assosa, thanked the team for their dedication. St. Paul’s continues to lead in high-risk maternal and newborn care in Ethiopia.

SPHMMC recently made headlines with the rare and successful birth of quadruplets. Leading the medical team was Dr. Ruth, whose skill and dedication ensured a safe delivery for both the mother and babies. We spoke with her about the experience and her journey in medicine.
A Historic Delivery Moment
Delivering the quadruplets was an exciting experience. The atmosphere in the delivery room was charged with anticipation and excitement, balanced by an underlying seriousness given the complexity of the situation. Our team had meticulously prepared for this birth, ensuring all equipment was ready. The collaboration among the nurses, anaesthetist, and pediatric side was seamless. As each baby was delivered, we celebrated the milestones while remaining focused on the health and safety of both the mother and her children. It was a profound moment, not just for the family, but for everyone involved in the delivery.
Chosen for the Challenge
I believe my selection for this rare delivery stemmed from my experience as a senior resident in managing high-risk obstetrics. Over the past years, I have been trained to manage such complex cases by my senior OBGYNs, which has equipped me with the skills necessary for such an event. Additionally, my focus on teamwork and collaboration within the medical staff fosters a supportive environment, making it easier to tackle challenging situations like this one.
Driven by Passion.
My journey into obstetrics and gynaecology was inspired by my passion for women's health and my desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of mothers and their families. Witnessing the joy and empowerment that comes with childbirth is incredibly rewarding. The ability to provide care throughout a woman’s life from adolescence to motherhood fuels my dedication to this field.
