Léopoldine Hugo

Léopoldine was the oldest of Victor Hugo’s children to survive infancy. She had three younger siblings but seems to have been the apple of her father’s eye.

When Hugo was away from home, he wrote to her nearly every day, and when Léopoldine was old enough to read, she was often the first person with whom he shared his latest work.

The picture: The sepulcher of Léopoldine and Charles

In Villequier, Normandy, the weather was calm, and Vacquerie invited his new bride to board a small board, but Léopoldne declined. Shortly after shoving off; however, Vacquerie returned to shore and ran to the house, claiming the boat needed more ballast. Upon seeing her husband, Léopoldine had a change of heart and decided to join.

Suddenly, a whirlwind of wind rises, strikes the sail, and abruptly capsizes the boat. Léopoldine couldn't swim; Charles, however, was an excellent swimmer.

He did everything he could to save his wife, who, underwater, desperately clings to the overturned boat. Charles dives and dives again, in vain. Then, in a moment of despair, he takes one last plunge to join his wife and never leave her again.

The two young newlyweds drown together. Léopoldine was only nineteen years old. Her heavy skirts pulled her down.

Hugo was traveling at the time, and no one knew how to reach him. He learned of his daughter’s death by reading the newspaper and was devastated:

“Yesterday, I had just come from a long walk in the sun through the marshes; I was weary, I was thirsty, I arrived at a village named, I believe, Subise, and entered a café. They brought me a beer and a newspaper, Le Siècle. I read. Thus, I learned that the better half of my life and my heart was dead.”

Victor Hugo did not write for several years afterward owing to the depression he developed following Léopoldine's death.
