Glory hole spillway | CFD simulation
SIMPAL GROUP

The glory hole spillway is a type of spillway used in dams or reservoirs to release excess water. It consists of a vertical, cylindrical or funnel-shaped structure with a large circular opening at the top. When water levels rise above the desired capacity, it flows over the dam and enters the glory hole spillway, which then channels the water downward and away from the dam. The name "glory hole" comes from the visual effect created when water plunges into the hole, often creating a spectacular display.

In this project, I used the VOF model to simulate the air-water flow inside it and estimated the massflow at the outlet.

Wave breaker refers to a structure or device designed to break or dissipate the energy of ocean waves, typically found along coastlines or in harbors. These structures are built to protect shorelines, beaches, and coastal infrastructure from erosion and damage caused by powerful waves. Wave breakers can take various forms, such as seawalls, groins, offshore reefs, or artificial islands. Their primary function is to reduce the impact of waves by absorbing or redirecting their energy before they reach the shore.

CFD simulation of a cooling tower using wind-breaker

🔻One of the most important issues of #cooling towers is the #blocking of outlet air at the top of the tower and decreasing the performance in high-speed upstream wind flows.

🔻In this project, I used an aerodynamic concept that shows the #separation of flow around the cylinder starts between 120 to 130 degrees.

🔻Based on this idea and using #CFD simulation, I designed a wind_breaker wall with some intake for this cooling tower which assumed the intakes are open after 120 degree. This helps the inside air to escape from the back side and the performance of the cooling tower increases!
