Word template with photo.docx

There are some countries, including Turkey, where you are expected to include a photo in your cv. Here is a solid Word template that contains a spot for a photo. Warning: the formatting could be off if you have a different version of Word or open this in another word processing software.
Dealing with difficult technical jargon in your application materials

If you are applying for jobs in a foreign language and also work in a field with highly demanding technical jargon, then the challenge of communicating your strengths and qualifications can seem doubly difficult. However, the truth is, that most of the writers I work with tend to handle the technical sections of their CVs, cover letters, and research proposals very well, even better sometimes than the less jargon-y sections. This is because technical jargon tends to follow very regular patterns that are very quickly learned by anyone who is regularly reading the literature.

However, in cases where you aren’t sure whether you are saying something the “right” way or whether a translation from your native language to English is correct, you can use a trick that I use when I am editing a document with a lot of terms and expressions I don’t recognize: consult Google. Google Scholar in particular is very useful for helping you determine how commonly a phrase or collocation appears in English-language publications. If a search for a particular string yields a lot of results, then you can be pretty certain that you are using this expression the correct way. If it yields no results, then you are still looking for the best way to say something (in a way that will be recognizable to your colleagues).

If you are uncertain about your English level, Cambridge English has a free test that will allow you to get a general assessment. It is a scaled down version of their full test and is mostly designed to guide you on the next steps in your English studies, but it will also help you understand how to characterize your English skills on a cv or application:

There are many excellent resources out there for practicing English grammer for free, including Duolingo and Babbel. While these don't offer the same individualized instruction and natural conversation practice of a dedicated teacher, they can help keep your grammar knowledge sharp and give you consistent opportunities to practice reading, listening and even speaking. I use Duolingo pretty regularly for learning Russian and have found it to be a good tool. It also offers a free test for helping to assess your level: https://www.duolingo.com/
To answer a subscriber question, no you typically do NOT need a language test for an international job or a visa. If you took one in the past and have a high score, you can include it on your CV, but this is not necessarily expected, and most hiring managers will just accept a self-rating and expect to verify your ability in the interview.

If you need help rating your own level, then the free Cambridge test linked earlier this week can help you do that.

Questions and Answers about Relocate Your Career

Subscribers, it has been a genuine pleasure to get to know the people who read this channel through the materials people submit to our review service. It is especially rewarding to get to talk face to face with individuals who request a virtual meeting. If you are interested in having your cv, cover letter, university application, research proposal, LinkedIn profile, or portfolio reviewed by one of our volunteers, please submit a request here:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeuxF0952nhkY5c3J8KPNDb_BXyxWet10_2Ql_FSdJyfYIVlA/viewform?usp=sf_link

Here also are answers to a few questions you might have about the service:

1. How long does it take?
It takes about a week for us to return materials submitted for asynchronous review, sometimes a bit longer or shorter depending on the volume of requests and things that may be happening in our work and lives generally. However, at the moment, appointments for text or video chat can be made within 24 hours most of the time.

2. How good should my English be?
If you are confident enough in your English to apply for jobs internationally, then you should be able to talk with one of our volunteers. We are all used to working with students with less than perfect English. No need to be shy!

3. Do I need to submit my materials ahead of time for a synchronous meeting?
Yes, if you don’t submit any materials with your request, then we will follow up and ask you to do so. This is because 1) it’s part of how we ensure that your request is not spam, and 2) it helps the volunteer prepare for the meeting ahead of time. Please wait until you are ready to show someone your document before you make your request.

Dear Friends, due to an unfortunate event involving a drowned SIM card and an unrecoverable Telegram account, we do not currently have admin control over this channel and haven't for some time. Telegram Support has not been able to help us, and we fear what is going to happen when the account used to start this channel auto-destructs.
