🔴 The Battle of Grozny - 31st December 1994
Today marks 30 years (31st December 1994) since the Russian Army's invasion and subsequent conquest of the Chechen capital, Grozny, during the early months of the First Chechen War.
Russian troops began bombing Grozny and sent four armoured columns toward the city's centre. The initial street battles ended with thousands of Russian and Chechen casualties, and the destruction of hundreds of Russian fighting vehicles. The Russians retreated, but then mounted a second assault on January 4.
The attack lasted from December 1994 to March 1995, which resulted in the military occupation of the city by the Russian Army.
The battle caused enormous destruction and casualties amongst the civilians and saw the heaviest bombing campaign in Europe since the end of World War II.
From the beginning of the invasion to the middle of February, fatality estimates range from 25,000 to 30,000 civilian deaths.

Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces have set ablaze the family home of Jamil al-Ammouri, the founder of the Jenin Battalion, the main anti-Israel resistance group in Jenin.
Al-Ammouri was assassinated by Israeli occupation forces in June 2021.

Written by a Syrian detainee on the walls of a cell of the notorious Branch 215 Military Prison in Damascus.
Branch 215 was one of the main Assad regime prisons where torture and mass executions were carried out on a daily basis. It is known by many names, including the "Branch of Death." The number of victims from this branch, which were documented by Caesar (a defected regime soldier) with photographs, runs up to 3,532, who died under torture or from disease and starvation.

Israeli air strikes across the Gaza Strip have killed at least 52 Palestinians.
The attack also killed the chief of Gaza’s police force, Mahmud Salah, and his deputy, Hussam Shahwan. Salah was a veteran officer who had spent 30 years in the force, serving six years as its chief.
Gaza’s Interior Ministry condemned the killings, saying the two police officers had been “performing their humanitarian and national duty in serving our people”.
