رويَ عن بعض السَّلف أنَّه قال: أدركتُ قوماً لم يكن لهم عيوبٌ، فذكروا عيوبَ الناس، فذكر الناسُ لهم عيوباً، وأدركتُ أقواماً كانت لهم عيوبٌ، فكفُّوا عن عُيوب الناس، فنُسِيَت عيوبهم، أو كما قال.
وشاهد هذا حديث أبي بَرْزَةَ، عن النَّبيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، أنَّه قال: «يا معشرَ من آمن بلسانه، ولم يدخُلِ الإيمانُ في قلبه، لا تغتابوا المسلمينَ، ولا تتبعُوا عوراتهم، فإنَّه منِ اتَّبَع عوراتهم، تتبَّع الله عورته، ومن تتبَّع الله عورته، يفضحه في بيته» خرَّجه الإمام أحمد وأبو داود.
