literally the best thing about living now is how much information we have on the celestial bodies. we know when the next full moon is for the next couple of centuries, we know when the next handful of eclipses are gonna happen, we know when this little rocks gonna swing by the planets orbit. it's fucking rad

I know they figured most of this out over 50 years ago at this point but the fact physics models are so reliable we can calculate that sort of thing back billions of years, to a point where the physics as we know it just stops working is incredible, makes me deeply happy to be alive source

Jack Baker and Michael McConnell fell in love in 1967—at a time when being gay was still classified as a mental disorder and two years before the Stonewall uprising ignited the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. As University of Minnesota students, they had never known a same-sex couple who had successfully married, but that didn’t stop them from trying. In 1970, they walked into the Hennepin County District Court Clerk’s office and became the first known same-sex couple in the U.S. to apply for a marriage license.

While studying law, Baker realized that Minnesota’s statutes did not explicitly forbid two men from marrying. “Under the rule of law, what’s not forbidden is permitted,” he explains. But when they applied for a marriage license, the county clerk refused.

Determined, they took legal action, only for a court to dismiss their case and order the clerk not to issue the license. source
