listen. if someone does something you don’t understand or you don’t think you’d ever do. maybe they’re not acting weird for no reason. maybe their incentive structure is different from yours. addiction changes your incentive structure. trauma changes your incentive structure. disability and cultural background and sexuality all change your incentive structure. there a million things that can make some decisions seem attractive to one person but not to another. there are conditions that Would make you do xyz because you’re a person too. it’s just that you haven’t met those conditions yet
I’m not saying this as a way to justify abuse or any kind of horrific behaviour. I’m just saying it is unhelpful to distance yourself from someone you don’t understand by categorising them as “a different type of person” to you. because at the end of the day that’s just not how things work source
