I know it's coming from people who also grew up poor and are reaching for explanations for the way their parents tried/failed/fucked it up, but it is genuinely classist to ascribe parental indifference to low income. I knew so many people growing up who had nothing and worked themselves to the bone and loved their kids fiercely. do not tell me coming up with treats for your kid is something only the moneyed classes can do.
Tumblr user liza:
also, please be aware that coming up with explanations for why your parents abused you is also a psychological consequence of the abuse. it is a form of injury stemming from the abuse or neglect, and it is a way the adult abused child defends themselves psychologically against the horror and confusion of experiencing the abuse. because if your parents "had a good reason" (for example, that you "deserved it") then you dont have to think about it anymore. it's a solved problem source

"I was sharing bathrooms with trans women 25 years ago.
"You couldn't go to a club in NYC in the 90s without seeing trans women and drag queens in the ladies room.
"You know what happened? Those horrible, scary, dangerous people fixed my eyeliner, complimented my clothes, gave makeup tips, helped me when I was drunk and praying to the porcelain god, got me into cabs safely, laughed with me, danced with me and made me feel safe among real predators (cis men)." source
