• India imports palm oil mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia, and a small quantity of crude soft oil, including soyabean oil from Argentina.

🍄 According to the Unified District Information System for Education data (UIDSE), One in seven Indian primary schools run by a lone teacher.

The persistence of single-teacher schools is a serious problem across the country, and affects a very substantial proportion of children in many states.

Even 14 years after the Right to Education Act came into force, the proportion of single-teacher schools in India is still as high as 15%. The Act clearly states that every school must have atleast two teachers.

🍄 Data - According to PRS Legislative Research, the percentage of Bills referred to Parliamentary committees has fallen from 71% in the 15th Lok Sabha to 27% in the 16th Lok Sabha (2014­-19) and an even lower 13% in the current 17th Lok Sabha.

Relevance - Parliamentary committees provide a forum where members can engage with domain experts for technical expertise. Many important bills including the three farm laws that were repealed recently did not get discussed in parliamentary committees.

🍄 Expansion of BRICS :

The 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg announced that the five-­member grouping (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) had invited six new members — Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia and Argentina.

• With the proposed expansion, BRICS will have 46% of world population, while its share of the global GDP will go from 31.5% in PPP terms to 37%, far ahead of the GDP of 30.7% of the G­7.

• The five core members account for 23% of global exports and 19% of global imports; with the new members, these figures will be boosted by 3.7% and 3%, respectively.

• The major impact will be on the energy sector: out of global oil production of about 90 million barrels per day in 2022, the earlier five BRICS members had accounted for 20% of global output; this will go to 42%.
