as a child on holiday with his family at dieppe, he wandered by chance onto a deserted section of the beach. in the shadow of the high cliffs, old fortifications left over from the war had tumbled into the sand and long lines of barnacle encrusted poles stretched out into the sea. there was something fascinating, sad, and at the same time stimulating about the scene. he promised himself that when he made his first film he would make it here, on this eerie seascape with the sound of the gulls wheeling overhead
