On 19 September 2020, the Swiss-Belarusian dual citizen Natallia Hersche took part in a women’s rally against the regime of dictator Lukashenko in Minsk. She was arbitrarily arrested and sentenced to a draconian prison term of 2 years and 6 months. Hersche is considered a political prisoner by human rights organisations – and yet Switzerland’s diplomatic efforts to obtain her release remain minimal. Now a broad women’s alliance of 34 signatories is calling on Foreign Minister and President of the Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis to take decisive action.

A very sad record today in Belarus.

The Belarusian Human Rights Center Viasna considers at least 1000 people to be political prisoners of the Lukashenko regime. Libereco demands EU entry bans for all prosecutors and judges responsible for prosecuting and sentencing political prisoners.

Today, Swiss citizen Natallia Hersche has spent exactly 500 days in detention in Belarus. Swiss Foreign Minister and current President of the Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis has so far miserably failed to secure her release from the clutches of the Lukashenko dictatorship.

As was published today, Switzerland is about to send a new ambassador to Minsk. There, she will meet Lukashenko and personally hand over her credentials to him. This diplomatic procedure effectively means that Switzerland recognises Lukashenko as the legitimate president of Belarus. We sharply criticise this approach and demand that Swiss foreign policy should first and foremost strengthen freedom and democracy.
