Sail Rock, also known as "Parus Rock," is a striking geological formation near the Gelendzhik resort on the Black Sea 🌊

This solitary sandstone cliff, shaped like a square sail, rises 31 metres above sea level. Composed of fine-grained yellowish-grey sandstone, it stretches perpendicular to the shore. One end juts into the water, while the other is 10 metres from the mountain base, surrounded by a pebble beach. A large hole at its base adds to its unique appearance.

Sail Rock is a remnant of a once-continuous sandstone bed, now isolated by the gradual erosion of the coastal massif due to abrasion. It is the only known flysch abrasion butte in the entire Black Sea region. Vegetation is minimal, with only a few orach bushes clinging to its upper edge.

⚓️ This geological wonder is not just a symbol of resilience but also a must-see destination for visitors to the Krasnodar Territory.

The next hero of our “Geological Quotes” 💭 section is Nicolas Steno:

Steno was the first to realise that the Earth's crust contains a chronological history of geological events and that this history can be deciphered by careful study of layers and fossils. He rejected the idea that mountains grow like trees, suggesting instead that they are formed by changes in the Earth's crust.

COPPER ISLAND OF CYPRUS
PART TWO

🐚This article continues from our exploration of Cyprus and its copper-rich geology.

The study of black smokers continues to reveal the hidden dynamics of Earth's geology, showing how the depths of the ocean contribute to the planet's complex and interconnected systems. They are a reminder of the untapped resources lying beneath the waves and a window into the processes that shaped our world.
