The Call to Prayer (Adhaan)..

The adhaan serves the purpose of calling people to prayer and signalling the beginning of the time of an obligatory prayer. Another call, called the iqaamah, serves the purpose of summoning Muslims to line up for the beginning of the obligatory prayers. Muslims used to meet up and seek to know the time of prayer, but no one summoned them. One day they were discussing how to gather everyone for prayer.

Some suggested using a bell as the Christians do, and others recommended using a ram’s horn, following an ancient Jewish practice. Then ‛Umar ibn Al-Khattaab t, one of the Prophet’s companions, suggested appointin gsomeone to call people to prayer. The Prophet agreed, so he turned to Bilal t, and said, “Get up, Bilaal, and call the people to prayer.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree: 579; Saheeh Muslim: 377)

• The adhaan ought to be recited in a nice and loud voice so people can hear it and come to the mosque and perform the congregational prayer.

Athan (The Islamic Call to Prayer)..

The call of God, the Great, the Self-Exalted that is repeated to listeners five times - during day and night - so that it may enter their hearts, speak to their souls about its meanings and details, and take the soul from inattention to awareness, from darkness to total light in this life and in the Hereafter, and from clear loss to success and truimph...

The adhan covers all the essentials of the Islamic faith in a few words:

1. 🔹It begins by proclaiming the greatness of Allah.

2.🔹It testifies to Allah’s tawheed and His exclusive right to worship.

3.🔹 It denies shirk – the worship of everything besides Allah.

4.🔹The adhan testifies that Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon him, is the Messenger of Allah.

5. 🔹It mentions belief in one of the greatest pillars of Islam: the salah (ritual prayer).

6. 🔹Invites to the prayer and equates it with prosperity, salvation and success (in the hereafter)

7. 🔹It affirms the reward for salah: prosperity for one who singles out Allah in tawheed, follows His Messenger, establishes the salah and other pillars of Islam.

8. 🔹It implies the loss of one who does not respond to the adhan and does not pray.

The Virtues of Adhan..

Many ahadith of our Prophet Muhammad describe the virtues of the adhan and the one who calls it:

- “If the people knew what was in the adhan and the first row (of the prayer in virtue), and that they could not get it save by drawing lots, they would draw lots.”[Saheeh Al-Bukhari and others]

The meaning of this hadith is that if the people knew the abundant reward in calling the adhan, and could not find any way to call the adhan except by drawing lots, then they would do that to attain its virtue.

Adhan (part 2 of 2): The Call to Prayer..

🔶 Ruling on Adhaan:

The adhaan is fard kifaayah (a communal obligation).
📢📢📢
The people of every town must have someone among them who can give the call to prayer so that the people may be informed that the time for prayer has come.

The scholars of the Standing Committee said:

The adhaan is fard kifaayah (a communal obligation) in a town, and the same applies to the iqaamah. If a person starts to pray without the adhaan or iqaamah, whether out of forgetfulness or ignorance, or for some other reason, the prayer is still valid. The same applies if the muezzin forgets the phrase al-salaatu khayrun min al-nawm (prayer is better than sleep) in the adhaan for Fajr prayer; the prayer is still valid even if there is still time left after he has finished his prayer (i.e., he does not have to repeat it). And Allaah is the Source of strength; may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions .

Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 6/54

There are many ahaadeeth which speak of the virtues of the adhaan, such as that narrated by al-Bukhaari, 609, from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri, which says that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “No jinn or human hears the voice of the muezzin for as far as it carries, but he will bear witness for him on the Day of Resurrection.”

📢

The Iqaamah...

1- Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar “Allah is the greatest of all, Allah is the greatest of all”

2-Ash hadu an laa ilaaha illallaah “ I bear witness that there is no God worthy of worship except Allah”

3-Ash hadu anna Muhammadan rasoolullaah “ I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”

4-Hayya ‛alassalaah “Come to prayer”

5- Hayya ‛alal-falaah“Come to success”

6-,Qad qaamat-issalaatu, qad qaamat-issalaah “ The prayer is about to begin, the prayer is about to begin”

7- Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar “Allah is the greatest of all, Allah is the greatest of all”

8-laa ilaaha illallaah “There is no God worthy of worship except Allah”

Adhaan and Iqaamah when praying alone..

It is mustahabb (recommended, encouraged) for the person who is praying alone to say the Adhaan and Iqaamah, because of the general meaning of the reports that refer to them.

It is makrooh (disliked) for him to neglect the Adhaan and Iqaamah.

Al-Shaafa’i (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
“If a man neglects to say the Adhaan and Iqaamah when he is praying alone or in congregation, I regard that as makrooh, but he does not have to repeat the prayers he did without the Adhaan or Iqaamah.”
...............................
Arabic Terms
◽️Mustahabb
This is used to describe acts which are rewarded but not punishable for their omission.

🔸Makrooh (Disliked):
This denotes those acts which Islam urges its adherents to avoid. Those who avoid them will be rewarded, and those who do them will not be subject to punishment.

💡 Supplication after the Adhan..

It is recommended, upon hearing each statement of the adhaan, to repeat after the mu’ath-thin (the caller to prayer) and say exactly as he says, except when he says Hayya ‛alassalaah “Come to prayer” or Hayya ‛alal-falaah “Come to success”, in which case one must say: Laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaah, which means “There is neither might nor power except with Allah”.

The Messenger of Allah said:

“Whoever says (after) hearing the call to prayer,
‘Allaahumma Rabba haa-zihi’l-da’wat il-taammah wa’l-salaat ul-qaa’imah, aati Muhammada nil waseelata wa’l-fadeelah, wab’athhu maqaaman mahmooda nil lazi wa’at-ta (O Allah, Lord of this complete call and of the established prayers, grant Muhammad the place of wasilah, the most virtuous place and raise him to a praiseworthy position that you have promised him)’,
…will have my intercession made permissible for him on the Day of Judgment.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari)

🔹One can also make individual supplications after the adhan, as that is one of the blessed times when the supplications are likely be accepted.

The Prophet said:
“Supplication (du’a) is not rejected between the adhan and iqamah, so supplicate.” (Al-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud)
