Creating a Map of Word Meaning in the Brain
The scientists used a novel technology that allowed them to simultaneously record the activity of up to a hundred neurons in the brain while people listened to sentences and short stories.
Using this approach, they discovered how neurons in the brain represent words with particular meanings. For example, they found that certain neurons became active when people heard action words such as “ran” or “jumped,” and other neurons became active when people heard emotion words such as “happy” or “sad.”
“When looking at all of the neurons together, we could start building a detailed picture of how word meanings are represented in the brain,” Williams said. Another important part of language is being able to rapidly distinguish the meaning of words within sentences, even when those words sound the same — for example, discerning “sun” from “son” or “see” from “sea.”

How Curiosity Styles Shape Wikipedia Use and Learning
A study of global Wikipedia browsing patterns reveals three curiosity styles: the focused “hunter,” the exploratory “busybody,” and the creative “dancer.” Data from 482,760 readers in 50 countries shows that cultural factors, such as gender equality and education levels, influence browsing styles, with more egalitarian countries showing greater exploratory browsing.
Researchers believe curiosity styles impact learning and may suggest tailored educational approaches. The study also hints at how AI systems might integrate curiosity-based learning behaviors. By understanding how curiosity differs, we can enhance both human and machine learning environments.

Baffling Chronic Pain Linked To Weird Rewiring Of Brain
Scientists peered at the brains of people with a baffling chronic pain condition and discovered something surprising. Their brains looked like an inept cable guy had changed the hookups, rewiring the areas related to emotion, pain perception and the temperature of their skin. The new finding begins to explain a mysterious condition that the medical community had doubted was real.
The changes in the brain take place in the network of tiny, white "cables" that dispatch messages between the neurons.
This is called the brain's white matter. Researchers discovered chronic pain caused the regions in the brain that contain the neurons -- called gray matter because of it looks gray -- to atrophy.
The people whose brains were examined have a chronic pain condition called complex region pain syndrome (CRPS.) It's a pernicious condition that usually begins with an injury causing significant damage to the hand or the foot.

Top 10 Toughest Education Systems in the World
Education systems worldwide differ, with some being more demanding than others. Several factors shape a country’s education system, such as its culture, government rules, and economic situation. In certain places, students spend extra time in school or face more challenging academic standards.
MastersDegree.net has listed some of the world’s toughest education systems, taking into account factors like the education system’s structure, the country’s most challenging exam, tertiary education attainment, the most popular degree, the prevalence of stress among students, the acceptance rate of the best college in that country, and average national IQ scores.

Call of Duty and suicide: should parents be concerned?
A coroner in Manchester has expressed concerns about the first-person shooter game, Call of Duty.
After recording a suicide verdict on William Menzies, 16, who was found asphyxiated in his bedroom in Hale, Greater Manchester, John Pollard stated: "I have to say, and this is after three or four inquests into the deaths of teens, the Call of Duty game seems to be figuring in recent activity before death. It concerns me greatly."
Pollard is not explicitly imparting blame on the game series, but his concerns are ambiguous. "I suspect but I don't know because I don't have enough evidence, that William may have been experimenting with something or deliberately intending to do something."
The cases are incredibly sad and no doubt extremely worrying to parents of boys who are of a similar age and who perhaps play similar titles on their consoles or PC. But can a link be made between suicide and a video game?
