The first mass-produced toothbrushes were created by Englishman William Addis in 1780. He came up with the idea for a toothbrush in a prison cell. As a sample, he used a dinner bone into which he inserted bristles from pig hair.
After his release from prison, Addis began mass producing toothbrushes and became rich. His company still produces millions of toothbrushes a year in Britain under the name Wisdom Toothbrushes.
With the development of toothbrushes in 1938, DuPont introduced a toothbrush with nylon bristles, eliminating natural hair.
During World War II, due to a shortage of cow bone, synthetic pens began to appear. From the 1950s to the 1990s, innovations occurred leading to toothbrushes with soft nylon bristles, varied handles, and smaller brush heads. In the 1960s, the electric toothbrush appeared.
