🟠 Al-Laḥaẓāt (Glances) Are One of the Four Gateways to Sin 🟠

💬 Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:
"Most of the sins that befall a servant come through these four doors. We will mention a section suitable for each door:

🟠 As for al-laḥaẓāt اللحظات (glances):
⬅️ They are the guide and messenger of desire.
🖇️ Guarding them is the foundation of guarding one's chastity.
🖇️ Whoever lets their gaze roam freely,
⬅️ will lead themselves to the gates of destruction."

🚫 Commentary:
Al-laḥaẓāt means looking.
🖇️ It is the guide and messenger of desire.

الرائد (The guide):
is the one who precedes.
💬 As the Arabs say:
"The guide does not lie to his people."
He is the one who precedes the tribe to the water source to ensure its safety and the absence of any harm.

🖇️ The eye precedes everything; it precedes the heart, the thoughts, and the ideas.
If the eye falls on something related to desire, it becomes the messenger, the envoy to the heart.

💬 Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله continued:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«إيَّاكُمْ والجُلوس على الطُّرُقَاتِ»،
قالوا: يا رسول الله مجالسنا ما لنا بُدٌّ منها!
قال : «فإنْ كنتم لا بُدَّ فاعلين فأعطوا الطريقَ حَقَّهُ»
قالوا : وما حَقُّه؟
قال : «غضُّ البصرِ، وكفُّ الأذى، وردُّ السلام».

Beware of sitting in the streets.
They said, “O Messenger of Allah, we have no alternative, these are our meeting places!”
He said: If you must sit there, then give the street its rights.
They said, “What are its rights?”
He said: Lowering the gaze, refraining from causing harm, and returning greetings of peace.

🖇️ Commentary:
🏷️ They asked, “What are the rights of the street?”
He replied: Lowering the gaze.

🖇️ If someone sitting in the streets must lower their gaze,
⁉️ How about those who spend 24 hours on social media platforms?
⬅️ Their situation is worse than the one who sits on the streets.

🖇️ The matter is not that simple.

💬 Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله continued:
🖇️ Looking is the root of most incidents that afflict a person.

◼️ For a glance,
◻️ leads to a thought,
◼️ then a thought leads to an idea,
◻️ then the idea leads to a desire,
◼️ then the desire leads to a will,
◼️ and eventually, it becomes a firm determination,
🖇️ resulting in action inevitably unless something prevents it.

🖇️ This is why it’s said:
Patience in lowering the gaze is easier than patience over the pain of what follows.

🖇️ Commentary:
It is said that a glance leads to a thought.
🏷️ When a person sees something, thoughts begin to play with their heart—
"Why am I like this? Why do others have what I don't?"

Ibn Taymiyyah said:
"There is no one without a trace of envy in their heart."

What does he mean?
⬅️ At the very least, it’s wishing for what others have.
🖇️ The generous person hides it, while the base person reveals it.

💬 Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله continued:
💬 The poet said:

All incidents begin with a glance,
And most fires start from a small spark.
How many a glance reached the heart of its beholder,
As an arrow shot from the bowstring.
A person remains exposed to danger,
As long as their eyes roam freely.
What pleases the eye may harm the heart,
So no welcome to a joy that brings harm.

🖇️ Commentary:
All incidents begin with a glance: Meaning, their origin and source.
The ears and eyes are the gateways to the heart;
the heart does not desire or wish for something until it sees or hears it.

🖇️ So if one controls their gaze, they have:
◼️ Gained mastery over themselves,
◼️ And also blocked the path to these afflictions that reach the heart.

🏷️ Ṭarf طرف: meaning the eye.
🏷️ Al-Ghayd الغيد: plural Ghaydā غيداء; refers to a slender, graceful woman who moves with softness and gentleness.
🖇️ As long as he keeps turning his eyes towards beautiful women.

He said:
"What pleases the eye may harm the heart"
Meaning: What your eye finds pleasure in may bring harm to your soul, heart, and spirit.

🏷️ Maqlatah يسر مقلته: pleases his eyes.
🏷️ Mujhtah ما ضر مجهته: refers to his soul and spirit.

🖇️ From the harms of the gaze is that it brings about:

◼️ Regrets,
◼️ Sighs,
◼️ and Burning Sorrows
🖇️ as the person sees what they cannot obtain nor can they bear to be without.

This is one of the greatest punishments:
⬅️ To see:
◼️ What you cannot bear to lose,
◼️ And what you cannot possess.

🖇️ Commentary:
⁉️ Why did he say: "From the harms of the gaze is that it brings about regrets,sighs and burning sorrows"?

🖇️ The answer:
You find a person lamenting their fate, cursing their lineage, wishing for ruin and destruction, because they don't have the same fortunes as others.

◼️ He sees beautiful women,
⬅️ but does not find the same in his wife.

◼️ This woman sees young men with strong muscles, luxurious cars, frequent travels, and a lavish lifestyle,
⬅️ but doesn't find the same in her husband.

🖇️ So she accuses him of lethargy, laziness, sluggishness, and bad luck, among other things,
⬅️ and the relationship between them explodes.

The Reason for the Guidance of Shaykh Abduz- Zahir Abu Al-Samh رحمہ اللہ

✍️The book Ad-Daa’ wad-Dawaa’ became a means of guidance for a great scholar, Shaykh Abduz- Zahir Abu Al-Samh رحمہ اللہ, who was one of the esteemed scholars of Al-Azhar University in Egypt.

He was a distinguished Azharite scholar whom King Abdulaziz, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, invited to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for teaching and leading the prayers at Masjid al-Haram. Shaykh chose to reside in Saudi Arabia, where Allah سبحانہ وتعالیٰ honored him with the position of Imam and teacher of Masjid al-Haram. He also played a great role in the establishment of Dar Al-Hadith Al-Khayriyah and was appointed as its director.

Shaykh mentioned that one of the reasons for his guidance was that he read this book.

🟠 Issues Related to Lowering and Guarding the Gaze 🟠

One of the main factors leading people to destruction today is the widespread use of social media platforms.

⚪ We can look at this in two aspects:
◼️ The forbidden aspect
◼️ The permissible aspect

🟠 As for the forbidden aspect:
📎 The danger in it is evident and cannot be hidden from anyone with vision.
📎 It is also easy to access.
📎 It also presents itself to you.

🖇️ Even if you don't follow idle people,
if someone from your relatives or contacts follows one of the immoral or idle people,
⬅️ It will be suggested to you.

🖇️ Also, idle people whose clips get many views will inevitably be presented to you.
This creates a serious challenge in maintaining your gaze and resisting temptation.

🖇️ So if something inappropriate, impermissible, or unlawful comes before you,
⬅️ You should immediately resist it. How do you resist it?
◼️ Either by closing that clip,
◼️ or by distracting yourself with something else,
◼️ or by avoiding following these pages from the start.

I know that many young men and women, and some of those present,
are in a state where sighs, groans, and the cries of agony burn their hearts due to the evil of pornography and other such things.

🖇️ Today, pornography is not just a random occurrence —
⬅️ It is a media industry backed by large corporations that invest billions in it.
🖇️ Therefore, it is not an easy matter.

🟠 As for the permissible aspect:
Reflect on this matter. Allah سبحانہ وتعالیٰ says to your beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

{وَلَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَیۡنَیۡكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعۡنَا بِهِۦۤ أَزۡوَٰ⁠جࣰا مِّنۡهُمۡ زَهۡرَةَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا لِنَفۡتِنَهُمۡ فِیهِۚ وَرِزۡقُ رَبِّكَ خَیۡرࣱ وَأَبۡقَىٰ} (طه: ١٣١)
"And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring."
(Surah Taha: 131)

This command is addressed to your beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ,
and we are also included in this.

🖇️ If Allah سبحانہ وتعالیٰ told His beloved not to extend his eyes toward permissible things (the splendor of worldly life), because this affects a person's nature and heart,
🖇️ no matter how strong-hearted,
◼️ strong-willed,
◼️ or tough-natured you may be,
⬅️ constantly viewing clips of the affluent, luxurious cars, and fine furniture,
⬅️ this will affect you.

🖇️ You will return to yourself with:
◼️ resentment,
◻️ feelings of disappointment,
◼️ lack of fortune,
◻️ lack of motivation, and so on and so forth.

🖇️ This is from one side.

🖇️ The second aspect of the issues with these matters is:
The social crises that have arisen due to social media today, all of which are included under the term "gaze,"
(All calamities begin with a glance.)

⬅️ Look at these clips now:
◻️ How many married women wish for a husband other than their own?
◻️ And how many married men wish for a wife other than their own?

Why ⁉️
⬅️ Because the eye saw,
⬅️ and when it saw, it desired,
⬅️ and when it desired, it wished for.

🖇️ You may find a married man messaging a married woman!
⬅️ She thinks he is better than her husband,
⬅️ and he thinks she is better than his wife.

🖇️ But if he married her, she would find out that he is lacking; this is one of the problems that have arisen.

🟠 Among the intellectual issues discussed by thinkers and others is what is called the "collapse of context."

🖇️ Today, our daughters and sons watch Snapchat clips, some YouTube clips, and Instagram,
⁉️ What happens?
This famous, wealthy person who is "successful" (as they say in common language), is filming three, four, or five minutes of his day.
⬅️ The viewer, the one who is watching, thinks that these three minutes reflect the entire 24 hours of this celebrity's life.
⬅️ And thus the context collapses.

🖇️ They don't know that this celebrity has pressures, a family, and other responsibilities.
◻️ He doesn't travel every day,
◻️ He doesn't go to a restaurant every day,
◻️ He doesn't take his wife out every day.
🖇️ He only films! ❗
🖇️ And perhaps he films just for show;
⬅️ The viewer thinks that this is their life.

The same goes for married women:
They see this celebrity taking his wife to a restaurant, a café, on trips, and so on every day,
⬅️ and they resent their husbands for not doing the same,
🖇️ not knowing that everything this celebrity does is just advertising, nothing more, with only a small part being real.
🖇️ So they build their thoughts and imaginations based on what they see.

The same goes for men—
Men also face a collapse of context.
🖇️ When they let their gaze roam over these famous women,
⬅️ This famous woman only shows herself when she is dressed in the finest clothes and adorned with the best accessories, etc.;
◼️ They think that all women are like this,
◻️ and that their wife is the only one who doesn't beautify herself 24/7,
◼️ and that their wife is lacking in beauty,
◻️ and that her beauty doesn't reach that level.

They don't realize that this famous woman they see is not naturally beautiful in the way she appears.
