At the moment I research a lot about parallels between German and Ukrainian and what words they have in common, “Schlagbaum” for instance. 😄
I’m still trying to get over the fact that гроші (hroshi = money) derives from the German word “Groschen” which was used to refer to a 10 Pfennig coin, back when the Mark was still in use. (Correct me if I’m wrong, I was only 1.5 years old when the Euro was implemented. 😉)

Слово "шлагбаум" є запозиченням з німецької мови, де Schlagbaum складається з іменників Schlag (укр. "удар") і Baum (укр. "дерево; дерев’яна колода").

I am beyond honoured to have been featured in an article for a Ukrainian online magazine about why foreigners learn Ukrainian. It's in Ukrainian, but here's the translation of my statement:

Ukrainian for travel and work

German photographer Celina decided to learn Ukrainian back in 2020. She admits that she had never planned a trip to Ukraine before, but it all happened by chance. Celina came here while working on a photo project and was fascinated by Ukraine.

"I realized that this is a touristically underrated country. Foreigners, especially people from the West, have a misconception about Ukraine. I wanted to change that," she says.
The language barrier during the trip motivated the photographer to take up language learning. At first, Celina started with Russian, but she didn't enjoy it. So she decided that if she was interested in Ukraine, she needed to learn Ukrainian. She began her studies with videos on YouTube and Duolingo, and later bought several language books. Celina continued to study Ukrainian on her own for two years until she started her first course in November 2022.

"I'm glad I started learning Ukrainian so early. Two years ago, everyone told me it was useless. But now my knowledge of the language has definitely come in handy," she says.

The most difficult thing in the learning process, she admits, was self-discipline and fear of speaking Ukrainian. The German recalls that she had many friends from Ukraine who mostly spoke German and English with her, so it was difficult to put the new knowledge into practice.

In 2021, Celina wanted to visit Ukraine again, but the pandemic interfered with her plans. Later, she managed to come to Kyiv on her own and work on a German-Ukrainian project. Now she writes articles for the German-Ukrainian magazine Gelblau, participates in a Ukrainian film club, and helps organize pro-Ukrainian protests in Berlin.
