         Grammar Lesson

               🔉 Lay VS. Lie  🔉

These two verbs could be easily confused since they're one of the most difficult irregular verbs. You need to understand their meaning before learning how to use them.

💬 Definition of LAY

Lay means to put something or someone down. Remember, PUT STH DOWN. Hence, 'lay' is a transitive verb, which means a direct object will follow it.

🔔 Example

I laid my books on the table.
◽️ I put my books on the table.

Don't lay the shirt on the bed.
◽️ Don't put the shirt on the bed.

💬 Definition of LIE

Lie means to rest or recline, so hence, this verb is intransitive, which means no direct object will be following it.

🔔 Example

I lie on the bed.
◽️ I rest on the bed.

Her cat lies on the floor.
◽️ Her cat rests on the floor.
