The Impending Crisis, 1860

Back in the 1840s and 50s, New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley was seen as an ally of Governor and then Senator William Seward. But by the time the Republican party replaced the Whigs, Greeley had fallen out with Seward. Here Greeley (in the rumpled clothes and top hat) pushes Seward over. This would end up helping Lincoln win the nomination later in 1860.

In 1957, fashion prodigy Yves Saint Laurent was photographed at Christian Dior’s funeral—just 21 years old and grieving the mentor who changed his life.

Hired as an assistant at 19, Yves quickly impressed Dior with his talent. When Dior died suddenly, the fashion world was stunned—especially when the young and relatively unknown Yves was appointed head designer of the House of Dior.

This pivotal moment not only honored Dior’s trust in him but also marked the start of Saint Laurent’s rise to fashion legend.

Scientists have successfully engineered three wolf pups using DNA traits from extinct dire wolves.

Created by Colossal Biosciences, the pups are genetically gray wolves but have been modified to mimic dire wolves in both appearance and behavior.

This marks the first major step in using de-extinction technology. The pups were developed by editing modern gray wolf DNA with traits found in ancient fossils.

In 1995, Jeff Bezos, aiming to economize during Amazon’s early days, crafted desks from inexpensive doors—a practice that became emblematic of the company’s frugality.

Remarkably, Bezos continues to use one of these original “door desks” today.

His fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, shared a photo in January 2024 of Bezos working at this desk.
