Back in Austen’s day, someone could easily refuse a gentleman. If you wanted to leave a party or your escort, you could say, “I am feeling unwell,” and no one would question your little euphemism for “You, sir, are making me ill.”
It takes self-assuredness not to take rejection personally. Pride certainly has its place. But misplaced pride can often keep us from giving others second chances or, even worse, cause us to scorecard relationship investments.
