Last Update:
In the two Sahihs, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever sees from his leader something he dislikes, let him be patient with it. For indeed, whoever separates from the Jamaa’ah even by a hand span and then dies, he dies a death of ignorance”.
Because of this, the righteous predecessors, may Allah be pleased with them, used to supplicate for the ruler to be righteous and to have righteous advisors and companions, as with them being correct comes the correction of the people and the land.
Imam Fudayl ibn ‘Iyaad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “If I had a supplication which was to be answered, I would not make it except for the leader, because if the leader would be corrected, the country and the people will be safe”.
This was also narrated from Imam Ahmad and from others among the righteous predecessors.
This is the creed of Ahlussunnah wal-Jamaa’ah, the followers of the righteous predecessors, may Allah be pleased with them. They based it upon the evidences of the Book and the Sunnah, not upon desires and false enthusiasms, and so they were the ones who were saved from misguidance in this world and misery in the Hereafter.
Imam Abu Muhammad Sahl ibn Abdullah At-Tustari, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “This nation consists of seventy-three sects: seventy-two are doomed, all of them hate the ruler, and the saved one is this single sect that is with the ruler”.
Imam Abu Qilaabah Abdullah ibn Zayd Al-Jarmi, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “No people have Innovated an Innovation except that they have deemed the sword lawful”.
And he said: “The people of Desires are people of Misguidance, and I do not see their end result except to be the Fire. Test them: there is no one among them who adopts a position -or he said: a Hadith- except that his matter ultimately leads to the sword. Indeed, hypocrisy is of different types”, then he recited:
(وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ عَٰهَدَ ٱللَّهَ)
"And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah".
[At-Tawbah:75]
(وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَلْمِزُكَ فِى ٱلصَّدَقَٰتِ)
"And among them are some who accuse you concerning the [distribution of] charities".
[At-Tawbah:58]
(وَمِنْهُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ ٱلنَّبِىَّ)
"And among them are those who annoy the Prophet".
[At-Tawbah:61]
Their statements differed, but they united in doubt and denial. And these people's statements differed, but they are united upon the sword. And I do not see their end result except to be in the Fire”.
