Last Update:
Steel Eccentrically Braced Frame
History and Performance in Past #Earthquakes:
1- Mixed #performance in the #Christchurch New Zealand earthquakes in 2010/2011.
2- In use since the 1970s in Japan and the 1980s in the U.S.
Advantages
1- R = 8, resulting in lower #design #loads on diaphragms, collector elements, and smaller footings.
2- Yielding generally concentrated in #links
3- Global brace #buckling and their effects on finishes avoided
Disadvantages
1- Takes up more visual “space” in the #building than a moment frame system, but perhaps less than other brace frame systems.
2- Large beam sizes to #accommodate large seismic loads.
3- Lower height limits than #moment frame #systems.
4- More #expensive than other braced frame systems in fabrication and erection.
