And in the Indo-European linguistic tradition, bears were revered which can be inferred by the practice of substituting the original word for the beast, *h₂ŕ̥tḱos, with epithets such as *berô (Germanic, "the brown one") and *medvě̀dь (Slavic, "honey-eater").
