Leeds Central and Headingley MP Alex Sobel

【Silent Protest Against the Hong Kong 47 Sentencing, Standing Firm in the Face of Harassment】
Yesterday, Hongkongers in Leeds held a silent protest in Leeds city centre against the unjust sentencing of the Hong Kong 47. Many stopped to learn more, express support, and stand in solidarity with those facing political persecution. Alex Sobel, MP for Leeds Central and Headingley, joined us as well to show solidarity with Hong Kong political prisoners. 💪🏻
During the event, a man suspected to be of Chinese nationality harassed us. Hongkongers in Leeds immediately reported the incident, and it is now under investigation by West Yorkshire Police. As we understand, the man has since been arrested.
No intimidation will silence us. We remain resolute in raising awareness of the deteriorating human rights situation in Hong Kong. Here in the UK, where freedom of speech and assembly are protected, we will continue to speak out for those who cannot. Harassment will not deter us from our cause.
We encourage everyone to continue supporting us and join us at future protests and events!

Founder of HongKongers in Leeds, Chloe Cheung Hei Ching, Officially Wanted by Hong Kong Police.
HongKongers in Leeds has expressed outrage at the announcement that Chloe Cheung Hei Ching, the founder, has been officially wanted by the Hong Kong police. The group stands in full support of Chloe. On the path of resistance, we will remain fearless. Regardless of the oppression we face, we will stand together until Hong Kong is free.
Chloe came to the UK at the age of 15. After completing her A-levels, she joined the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation (the CFHK Foundation). Since then, she has been dedicated to advocating for Hong Kong’s cause, expressing the voices of Hongkongers in exile, and resisting the authoritarian government.
She gave up the comforts of student life and chose the path of resistance. Forced to leave her familiar home in Hong Kong, she is now a target of the bounty. Chloe may be a young person chosen by destiny, but it is her determination to carry the burdens for Hong Kong and for the diaspora that makes her stand out.
Hongkongers must be strong.
Here in Leeds, we have Chloe Cheung Hei Ching. We believe she is not alone. We hope more people, regardless of their age, education, skills, profession, or physical ability, will rise to join the resist. If a young girl who arrived in the UK at the age of 15 can bear the heavy responsibility of standing against the CCP, we believe every capable Hongkonger can do the same.
If you haven’t yet participated in any protests or activism, we urge you, as a member of the Hong Kong diaspora, to take action. Let’s help shoulder Chloe’s burden together. This time, we will write a joint letter to MPs to draw attention to this case and urge the UK government to address the issue of transnational suppression. Please don’t hesitate—take a small step today and support all our actions.

【Leeds South West & Morley MP Mark Sewards

This afternoon, the UK Parliament held a debate on “Pro-democracy Campaigners: Arrests.” During the session, Leeds MP Mark Sewards raised the issue of Chloe Cheung, founder of the HongKongers in Leeds, who has recently been targeted by the Hong Kong government with a HK$1 million bounty on her head. He questioned the Under-Secretary in the FCDO, Catherine West, on what measure the UK government would take to ensure the protection of Chloe and other Hongkongers from transnational repression.
Two weeks ago, we called for supporters to write to their local MPs. It is likely that today’s contribution from Mark Sewards MP is a result of this letter-writing campaign successfully bringing the matter to his attention.
We would like to thank everyone who took part in writing to their MPs. We also urge all Hongkongers to continue to raise important issues with their MPs. There are still many topics that need to be brought to MPs for follow-up and debate. Let your elected representatives bring the matters you care about to Parliament for discussion. Add oil, Hongkongers!
🚨 The ETA Issue Needs Your Support
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is not a visa but a travel permit. However, for those fleeing political persecution, the requirements for an ETA may result in unnecessary delays or barriers. In other countries like Canada and the US, there have already been cases where individuals were denied ETAs or visas due to their participation in peaceful protests. If such situations were to occur in the UK, it could have a severe impact on asylum seekers.
We urge you to write to your MP, asking the UK government to review its ETA policy and ensure that the rights of British National (Overseas) (BNO) passport holders to enter the UK are protected.
