As do any other developing countries, our country has different healthcare challenges including; shortage of healthcare workers, limited infrastructure and high burden of communicale and non-communicable diseases to say the few. On the other hand, there are also issues regarding lack financial sustainability (funding gaps).
Despite all these challenges, we sincerely commend Ministry of Health’s (MOH) continued efforts to strengthen Ethiopia’s healthcare system through strategic support to Regional Health Beaureus and different University hospitals. These institutions play a vital role not only in clinical care and medical education, but also in serving as lifelines for their surrounding communities.
Currently our country is in Epidemiologic transition with many patients developing Noncommunicale diseases (NCDs). A direct and focused Support initiatives from Minister of Health (MOH) to strengthen some inistitturions by launching specialized care center is very important.
Although Minister of Health (MOH) is launching different initiatives to increase coverage specialized healthcare services, most of such direct support and initiatives to stablish some specialized care centers by MOH is largely concentrated only some hospitals in the center (capital) of the country like SPHMMC, Alert hospital, St. Peter Hospital,....etc. While central hospitals have received commendable support, many communities in peripheral areas are facing barriers to accessing advanced medical care.
According to proclamation no. 1097/2018 G.C, one of the Power and Duty of MOH is; “To Prepare the country’s health coverage map; Provide support for the expansion of health infrastructure”
As healthcare needs continue to grow across the country, we respectfully urge office of MOH to build upon and expand the visionary initiatives launched by MOH of 6 years back. Particularly, the development of specialized care centers in peripheral Hospitals in different regions of the country.
The best example of such Initiatives was, Building Six (6) RADIOTHARAPY centers by MOH in peripheral Hospitals. This iniative expand Cancer Radiotherapy Services from only one center (Tikur Anbessa hospital) in Ethiopia to six (6) centers across different regions, some of which already started providing services for the surrounding communities.
Developing such specialized care centers in different parts of the country will augument MOH’s efforts to strengthen Ethiopia’s healthcare system and would help to;
- Reduce geographic health disparities and improve equity
- Strengthen local capacity for managing complex conditions
- Enhance training and retention of skilled professionals in regional settings
- Reinforce Ethiopia’s commitment to inclusive, community-centered healthcare
Therefore, I would recommend MOH to establish and develop at least Five center of excellence (hubs) based on geograhic areas (CENTRAL, NORTHERN, WESTERN, SOUTHERN, EASTERN) in big university hospitals in the area in collabration with respective Universities, rather than building all specialized care centers/Units in center of the country.
I believe the leadership of MOH would look into this concerns and work strategically to transform peripheral hospitals into hubs of excellence and hope. Investing Hospitals in the periphery is a strategic move toward a healthier, more resilient Ethiopia.
With deep respect and optimism, I would like extend my sincere appreciation for the leadership of MOH in advancing Ethiopia’s health sector.
Congratulations to all Ethiopians on Inaguration of #GERD! #ItisMyDam

🙋 How many times did you get a medical test result marked "positive" and instantly felt worried, only to find out later it was actually good news?
This is not uncommon, especially in cancer care. For example, when a breast cancer patient hears "ER positive," many understandably fear the worst. But in reality, ER positive status is a sign that the cancer may respond well to hormone therapy, a hopeful message. I have personally seen patients panic after reading results on their own, including one who was so overwhelmed by the wording of her CT scan report that she felt despair and even considered suicide. It’s alarming how easy it is for patients to open test results envelopes and misinterpret complex medical information without guidance.
That’s why it’s time we rethink how results are communicated. Passing lab and imaging reports directly to the ordering physician through secure electronic means could prevent unnecessary anxiety and misunderstandings. Some institutions in Addis Ababa, such as a certain government diagnostic center, have started adopting such initiatives, which is truly commendable. A recent study published in 2023 highlights the risks and benefits of immediate patient access to test results, echoing the need for a balanced approach that protects patients while keeping them informed.
Currently, there is no published study from Ethiopia specifically examining how patients react to reading their own medical test results versus receiving explanations from their doctors. Most local research focuses on lab quality and clinician use of tests, leaving patient understanding and emotional responses from self-reading of results largely unexplored. This highlights an important area for future research and local health system improvement.
⁉️ What do you think?
Should we reform how patients receive their results to keep them better supported?

🌍✨ A Battle Won at 90! ✨🌍
In Mogadishu, a nonagenarian (90-year-old) gentleman stood face to face with death. For years, he lived in fear — collapsing from fainting spells, gasping for breath, and struggling with a heart too weak to carry him forward. Many centers had evaluated him. He was on waiting lists. Hope seemed distant.
But last week, everything changed. 💙
Against all odds — with only a single functioning kidney and a rare congenital heart anomaly, bovine aortic arch — he underwent a life-saving open heart surgery AVR (Aortic Valve Replacement).
Led by the skilled hands of Dr. Berhanu Hailemariam and the tireless Tazma Heart Team, this open-heart surgery became more than a medical procedure — it became a symbol of courage, innovation, and possibility.
Today, this 90-year-old survivor is recovering strongly, proving to the world that age is no barrier, hope is never lost, and every heartbeat is worth the fight.
