π GBS Survivor Strong π
Iβm a survivor of Guillain-BarrΓ© Syndrome (GBS) and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves.
I fought this battle for 588 days, from March 27, 2016, to November 17, 2017 β a condition that tested my strength, resilience, and spirit. There were days filled with uncertainty, pain, and fear. But through it all, I discovered the power of hope, courage, and community.
π₯ 588 days later, on November 17, 2017, I walked again without support. No wheelchair. No cane. Just Godβs mercy.
I didnβt stop there. After healing, I joined Addis Ababa University and earned my MSc in Geodesy & Geomatics on July 20, 2023.
β¨ Donβt give up. Prayer works. Fasting heals. Faith moves mountains.
Blessed be God.
------------------------------------
The exact cause of GBS not fully understood, but it is often triggered by an infection. Common triggers include:
β’ Respiratory infections (like the flu or common cold)
β’ Gastrointestinal infections (such as Campylobacter jejuni bacteria from contaminated food or water)
β’ Other viral infections (such as cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, or Zika virus)
β’ Rarely, after vaccinations or surgery
The immune response to these infections can cause inflammation and damage to the myelin sheath (the protective covering of nerves), leading to muscle weakness, numbness, and paralysis.
------------------------------------
To anyone going through GBS or any tough battle: You are not alone. Your body might be fighting, but your spirit is stronger.
Recovery is a journey β some days will be harder than others, but every step forward is a victory.
Letβs raise awareness about GBS, a rare but serious illness that affects thousands worldwide. Early diagnosis and support can make all the difference.
π Share this to spread hope and knowledge.
πͺ Stay strong, keep fighting, and believe in the power of recovery.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed for a patient with situs inversus totalis at Grand Bishoftu Hospital | A rare surgical entity
We are immensely proud to share a landmark achievement from our surgical team at Grand Bishoftu Hospital. We recently had the privilege of successfully performing a laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) on a patient with situs inversus totalisβa rare congenital condition where the major organs are mirrored from their normal positions.
This condition is exceptionally rare, with only a handful of such cases reported worldwide each year, making this opportunity once-in-a-Career Surgery! To our knowledge, this is the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed on a situs inversus patient in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Despite formidable technical challenges, especially for a right-handed surgeon, our very own Dr. Segni Bekele successfully performed a groundbreaking surgery, expertly assisted by Dr. Ema Mulet from France, representing the legendary Clinique de la Sauvegarde β the pioneering hospital in laparoscopic surgery, and Dr. Tatek Belay - the team was supported by Dr. Bekan in anesthesiology and Geda as the scrub nurse.
The surgery was a complete success. Thanks to the minimally invasive laparoscopic technique, our patient experienced a remarkable recovery, was discharged in excellent condition, and was able to return to work within just one week.
To celebrate this unique milestone and to thank the patient for her incredible trust in our team and hospital, we were honored to present her with a gift. This case is a powerful testament to the advanced surgical capabilities and dedicated care available at Grand Bishoftu Hospital.
At GBH, weβre not just saving lives β weβre setting new standards!
Precision. Skill. Collaboration. Innovation. A proud moment for GBH and for African surgery!
