به طور کلی "tortured phrase" به معنای عبارتی است که به شکلی غیرطبیعی، پیچیده یا ناهنجار بیان شده باشد. این نوع عبارت‌ها معمولاً برای انتقال یک ایده یا مفهوم به کار می‌روند، اما به دلیل انتخاب کلمات نامناسب، ساختار گرامری نامتعارف یا تلاش بیش‌ازحد برای زیبا یا پیچیده نشان دادن، واضح و روان نیستند. این عبارت نامفهوم و غیرعادی معمولا توسط نرم افزارهای ویرایش متن هوش مصنوعی یا نرم افزارهای پارافریزر ایجاد میشن و یکی از دلایل اصلی ریترکشن برخی مقالات علمی هستند که نویسندگان بابه کار بردن آنها تلاش در دور زدن نرم افزارهای تشخیص پلاجیاریسم متنی مانند iThenticate دارند.
