Last Update:
Turkish media announced the upcoming visit of the leader of the Republican People's Party of Türkiye Özgür Özel to Damascus to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Reportedly, Damascus just agreed to hold such a meeting.
Although the main declared issue of the meeting is the problem of Syrian refugees in Türkiye, one should pay attention to Özel's own statement on his readiness to mediate a personal meeting between Bashar al-Assad and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In our opinion, despite the fact that the Republican People's Party remains the largest opposition force in Türkiye and a main political competitor of the ruling Justice and Development Party, Özel's visit doesn't look like his strictly personal initiative, being at least understood if not supported by official Ankara. Moreover, Damascus would have hardly expected to receive him on the highest level if it were only about discussing humanitarian issues.
Thus, Erdogan seemingly continues carrying out attempts aimed to facilitate his personal meeting with the Syrian president on the Turkish territory and apart from foreign mediators.
Earlier, in my Telegram channel, I briefly commented on the challenges and prospects for a Syrian-Turkish rapprochement.
