🎙 Commentary by the representative of the Russian Federation «On the occasion of International Sami Day» (meeting of the OSCE PC, 06.02.2025)
🗓 On February 6, International Sami Day is celebrated. In Russia, Sami are the indigenous people who mainly live in the Murmansk region. They retain the traditional way of life and realize themselves as an independent ethnic community
🔹 In order to preserve traditions and customs, to popularize the original national culture on an ongoing basis, various cultural events are organized. At the request of parents, the children of Sami have the opportunity to learn their native language in schools
🔹 In Western countries number cases of discrimination against Sami is increasing. They are faced with violence and persecution. A similar unacceptable situation has developed in Sweden and Finland
🔹 We hope that the situation will be straightended by the mentioned Scandinavian countries claiming leadership in the field of human rights. Apparently, it is time for them to take care of the situation with the protection of freedom at home
🔹 Sami are people of very original culture. Everything possible must be done to preserve its language and traditions. Congratulations to all Sami on the occasion their holiday!
