There was a farmer who's horse runs off one day. Neighbors in the village come by and say "this is terrible! what misfortune has found you!"

The farmer says "May be."

In the following days the horse returns leading two more wild horses back with it.

The neighbors hear and come back and say, "This is amazing, what a turn of luck!"

The farmer replies, "May be."

In the following days the farmer's son falls off a horse and breaks his leg.

The neighbors come again to visit and offer condolences, "Poor young man, just when planting time has begun. What a calamity!"

The farmer shrugs and says, "May be."

The next day conscription officers for the army come to the village and discover the young man's broken leg and he's passed over.

The neighbors come again, "What luck of timing, fortune smiles on your family!"

The farmer again replies, "May be."
