አስተርእዮ ማለት መታየት፣ መገለጥ ማለት ነው። ቃሉ አስተርአየ ታየ፣ ተገለጠ ከሚለው የግዕዝ ግሥ የተገኘ ነው። ጌታችን መድኀኒታችን ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ በገባው ቃል ኪዳን መሠረት በሥጋ የተገለጠበት(የታየበት) ፣ አንድነት ሦስትነቱም የተገለጠበት ወቅት በመሆኑ ከልደት በዓል እስከ ጥር መጨረሻ በሙሉ ዘመነ አስተርእዮ በመባል ይታወቃል። የእመቤታችን በዓለ ዕረፍት በዘመነ አስተርእዮ ውስጥ ስለሚከበር “አስተርእዮ ማርያም” ተብሏል።
