كان النبي صلى اللّٰه عليه وآله وسلم يتكفل يتيماً، وكان كلما يجلس على طعامه يحضره ويأكل معه فلما مضى زمان مات اليتيم فلم يأكل النبي في الليلة طعاماً، وكان يتأسف على فواته فقال له أصحابه كم تحزن قلبك بفوته وحرمانك منه نحن نجيئك بيتيم آخر فتكفله، قال صلى اللّٰه عليه وآله وسلم هذا اليتيم كان سيّئ الخلق، وأنا كنت تحملت سوء أخلاقه فلا يحصل لي من غيره مايحصل منه من الفيض. وقال صلى اللّٰه عليه وآله وسلم: أنا وكافل اليتيم كهاتين في الجنّة إذا لقي اللّٰه (وأشار بالسبابة والوسطى).
