Last Update:
There is a historical example where a candidate who had the majority of votes at the party conference was replaced. The most notable case is from the 1896 Democratic Convention.
In August 1896, the Democratic presidential candidate, William Jennings Bryan, gave a famous "Gold Cross" speech at the Democratic Party convention. After the speech, he won widespread support and won the party's presidential nomination. Before his speech, the leading candidate was Richard P. Bland, who received the majority of votes in the first rounds. But after the "Golden Cross" speech, support for Bryan quickly increased and he was able to replace Bland as the party's candidate.
It is a rare case where a candidate who was leading with the majority of votes in the first rounds, was replaced by another candidate thanks to a speech or significant event that changed public opinion at the convention.
