این جانوران عمدتا با اشاره، حرکات دست و حالات چهره، با یکدیگر ارتباط برقرار می‌کنند.

دانشمندان از بررسی دقیق مکالمات شامپانزه‌ها متوجه شدند که آنها هنگام گفتگو سریع پاسخ داده و گاهی اوقات حرف یکدیگر را قطع می‌کنند. پروفسور کت هوبایتر از دانشگاه سنت اندروز اسکاتلند به بی‌بی‌سی گفت یافته‌های تحقیق نشان‌دهنده «شباهت‌های عمیق تکاملی بین انسان‌ها و شامپانزه‌ها در شیوه مکالمه رو در رو است.»
