🇨🇳Alibek Bakayev, Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan, and Nurlan Ermekbayev, Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, met in Beijing on 21 January
The meeting was devoted to reviewing current SCO activities and planning high-level events for 2025. Both sides discussed the need for concerted efforts to enhance the functionality of the SCO in order to transform it into an “effective and mobile multilateral structure.”
The main activities for 2025 are:
⏺In 2025, China will host the 25th meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State. This summit is expected to focus on the formulation of a “development plan” and consensus building among member states.
⏺There has been a proposal to declare 2025 as the SCO "Year of Sustainable Development" in order to stimulate strength in projects on:
⏺ Poverty reduction
⏺ Food security
⏺ Health care
⏺ Industrialization
⏺ Digital economy and connectivity
⏺ In 2025, the SCO plans to develop two important documents. A summit declaration, timed to coincide with such significant dates as
⏺80th anniversary of the victory in the war of the Chinese people against Japanese aggression
⏺The founding of the United Nations.
⏺The organization is stepping up efforts to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism. The SCO has adopted a Program of Cooperation against these threats for 2025-2027, emphasizing the Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS) and joint exercises such as the Peace Mission.
⏺Discussions and plans include improving regional rail service and infrastructure development. The plan, developed for 2023-2025, is likely to be extended.
