#PeoplesHistory | Today, we remember Black revolutionary leader and founding member of the Black Panther Party, Huey P. Newton.
Newton was instrumental in laying the ideological and organizational foundation for the BPP, such as the 10 Point Program, and is renowned for his role in helping develop the community-focused survival programs, such as the Free Breakfast for Children program.
Newton’s writings and work, such as his 1973 autobiography "Revolutionary Suicide", have left a permanent mark on the Black Liberation movement and the socialist movement broadly.
Newton, like many others in the Black liberation movement, was a target of the FBI’s COINTELPRO, which sought to sow division between revolutionary leaders and organizations. Newton was assassinated on August 22, 1989.
