#Newton had published his law of #gravitation in 1687, but he hadn’t made any attempt to determine the constant #G or the mass of Earth. Then in 1798, another English man came into scene and he calculated the #density (and hence the #mass) of the #Earth. That man is our "scientist of the day" today.
It's the birthday of #HenryCavendish, the man who devoted his life to science
(Scientist of the Day - 10 October)
Cavendish was an important experimental and theoretical physicist & chemist. Because of his asocial and secretive behaviour, he often avoided publishing his work, and much of his findings were not told even to his fellow scientists. In the late 19th century, long after his death, #JamesClerkMaxwell looked through Cavendish's papers and found observations and results for which others had been given credit. Some examples of what was included in Cavendish's discoveries or anticipations were:-
- Richter's law of reciprocal proportions,
- Ohm's law......
