It’s so easy. source
I wrote this to acknowledge what many of us are feeling and what groups of parents have shared is true for them. Parenting while preparing for potential ICE abductions in my community has been very challenging. I also have family members who are undocumented and the fear is visceral for me and had brought my lineage’s ancestral trauma of displacement right to the surface.

I’ve committed to trying to be as intentional as possible in navigating my emotional states, my needs, and I’ve found myself needing my tools for regulation more than if this wasn’t happening to our communities.

Confidence and community in these conversations is EVERYTHING.

This is exactly the conversation we will be getting into THIS WEEKEND. This month, we will be hosting another round of ✌🏽 of our favorite workshops: What to Tell the Children, hosted by LP founder @LesliePriscilla (Sat 7/12), AND Teach Them Young (Sat 7/26), hosted by source
FLASHBACK FRIDAY Y’ALL! 😂

For real though, being the child of immigrants is a wild ass ride. The level of responsibly. 😮‍💨 Whew, that shit sucked so bad sometimes. Recently I was going through an old storage bin that my mom had in her parking garage storage and found a form for a food stamps application that I had filled out when I was probably 10 or 12. Really, really. My handwriting was a CHILD’S. If I wasn’t already on my knees sorting through papers, it probably would’ve brought me to my knees. Oh mi Prisci, mi niña interior, my heart grieves for so many moments of your lost childhood!! 😭

See, if this wasn’t your experience because your parents could read and write English, maybe you won’t get it. 🤷🏽‍♀️ But for those of us who grew up and were asked to be the family secretary from the time we were literate, well, it feels complicated and it really be like that for so many of us. 🤢

I know, too, that there are STILL kids doing this for their parents. Shit, I’M STILL doing this for my parents. It’s every other week my mom walks in with a stack of papers “Ayudame con pestos papeles que no les entiendo.” And tbh, a veces yo tampoco still because I’m an English Language Learner STILL 😂

But we go on and we help and we do what we can to have compassion for our parents’ experiences, even though it makes our throats knotted up. 🥺

Big hugs if this was your experience. Big hugs to all the kids out there still using their Number 2 pencils from their backpacks to fill out forms and translate documents for their parents. ABRAZOTES to your inner niñes too. 🫂💞
