Last Update:
The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution calling for an “immediate, unconditional, and permanent” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, as Israel’s bombardment of the Palestinian territory continues.
On Wednesday morning, the U.S. voted against the measure, while all 14 other council members supported it.
Although the resolution included a call for the release of captives held in Gaza, Washington objected to the demand for an “unconditional” ceasefire.
“We made clear throughout negotiations that we could not support an unconditional ceasefire that failed to release the hostages,” said Robert Wood, the deputy U.S. envoy to the UN, during the session in New York.
This marks the fourth time President Joe Biden’s administration has vetoed a resolution seeking to end the conflict in Gaza since Israel's military campaign began in October last year.
