There's a lot of research on the connection between the gut microbiome and mental health disorders. But what about the oral microbiome?
Sample: 470 participants.
Respondents provided self-reports on the presence of symptoms of mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and also had saliva samples taken for analysis using a genetic method that identifies bacteria.
Shown: significant differences were found in the composition of the saliva microbiome between individuals with symptoms of mental health disorders and those who are conditionally healthy. Individuals with PTSD symptoms had higher levels of the bacterium Prevotella histicola, which is associated with oral inflammation. Those with anxiety symptoms had higher levels of Neisseria elongata, linked to oral and cardiovascular health. People who reported emotional neglect in childhood had more Streptococcus mutans, a bacterium associated with tooth decay. The study is not causal.
