Last Update:
Is there stereotyping of people based on their accent?
Sample: 180 participants.
Participants were presented with ten male voices, standardized for speed, tone, and intensity, speaking English but with different accents, such as Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, etc. Respondents were asked to rate the voices on social attributes and the likelihood that the speaker would be inclined to commit a crime.
Shown: the lower the perceived status of the voice, the more likely the speaker is to be considered prone to criminal behavior. For example, if an accent is perceived as associated with the working class, negative expectations arise. The issue of such stereotyping is evident in the evaluation of voices in legal cases. The authors propose introducing a system for pre-evaluating voice bias.
