اولین روزنامه فارسی زبان که در ایران منتشر شد، «کاغذ اخبار» نام داشت. این روزنامه در سال ۱۲۲۷ خورشیدی (۱۸۴۸ میلادی) توسط میرزا صالح شیرازی در تبریز منتشر می‌شد.
پیش از انتشار روزنامه «کاغذ اخبار» در ایران، چند روزنامه فارسی‌زبان در خارج از ایران منتشر شده بودند. مهم‌ترین آن‌ها عبارتند از:
روزنامه اختر: این روزنامه در سال ۱۲۵۴ خورشیدی (۱۸۷۵ میلادی) در استانبول (قسطنطنیه) در دوره قاجار منتشر می‌شد.
روزنامه حبل المتین: این روزنامه در سال ۱۲۷۲ خورشیدی (۱۸۹۳ میلادی) در کلکته (هند) منتشر می‌شد.
